One of the leading autism centres in India, we support children with autism, cognitive and otherdevelopmental disabilities and their families. With the help of our members, supporters and volunteers, we provide information, support and pioneering services, and campaign for a better world for the differently abled.
Kerala has very few specialized Autism training centres. In special schools, there is no preferential training earmarked for children with autism. This has prompted CAI to launch their training centre for autism. At the outset, we have 25 children in our training programme. Our training is inclusive of various therapies like physiotherapy, speech therapy, vocational therapy, and acupressure therapy. Teacher student ratio is 1:5, ably assisted by nannies. Our present programme caters to children between the age group of 3 to 15 years.
Caretakers of autistic children need to be trained to effectively handle them. Primary caretakers like Parents and siblings belong to this category. Training in school should be supplemented and supported at home. Success of the training programme is dependent on this to a great extent. Our Home Training Programme is a major initiative to effectively impart training methodology to the child's family in a familiar environment. Special educators along with medical faculty communicate their overall assessment of the child to his family. This in turn is made possible by observing the activities of the child and his family in their home. When school activities like life skills is repeated at home by parents, the learning and teaching process complement each other thereby reaping maximum benefits for our children with autism.
Early discovery of autism and necessary intervention is of primary importance. In cities, this has been made possible through concerted efforts. But, the situation is indeed very sad and depressing in villages and rural areas. Awareness campaigns hold the key in educating people at the grassroots level. We have envisioned conducting such campaigns in 25 villages of Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. (Names of villages to be added later)
We focus on trainingyouth and people from all walks of life to help bring the autistic into the mainstream of life. A batch of 25 people will be given training at a time. We aim to facilitate our youth to care and support their brethren with autism thereby owning up to their social responsibility. At least ten such training programmes are to be held every year.
We have incorporated the latest interactive training programme for Autism in our curriculum. Children undergo individual assessment and based on that goals are envisaged for each child. Activities and step by step training are formulated to attain this in an effective manner. An assessment done every three months, aims to evaluate the training.
